I'm at the beginning of my journey into the world of autism. My son sees the world differently than typically developing people with so called typical minds, and I find it absolutely fascinating. This is all new to me, and I am no expert in Autism. I am just a mother on a mission to gain new knowledge and experience as I raise my child to be as happy and independent as possible.

Pica??
I just caught Wylie chowing down on some chalk. This isn't the first time he has done it. He loves drawing with sidewalk chalk out on the patio, but I'm not really sure where this piece came from, since we are all the way on the second floor and nowhere near the backyard... Won't eat regular food, but this is what you'll eat?

Doesn't chalk contain calcium? (I'm showing huge scientific ignorance here) He's eating weird stuff but at least he'll have healthy bones LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi. I love the name of your blog!
ReplyDeleteI think we've all encountered that with our kids at one time or another. At my pediatricians office one day my son bit the window sill and the ped. said, "mineral deficiency"...increase all the minerals - calcium, mag, zinc". That did it. He stopped chewing on everything. Kids do Pica for different reasaon but I just wanted to mention that in case it is helpful.
Thank you, ladies! Autism Mom Rising... interesting, since he is a picky eater, a deficiency wouldn't exactly shock me...
